New Zealand's Kyle Jamieson took 4-50 in 11.1 overs on the opening day of the first Test against England at Lord's
London (AFP) - Kyle Jamieson did the bulk of the damage as England suffered a dramatic collapse on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord’s on Thursday.
England had slumped to 118-8 in bowler-friendly conditions when bad light forced an early tea, with paceman Jamieson taking 4-50 in 11.1 overs.
Only Harry Brook, with 56, offered meaningful resistance and he was dropped twice in the only blemishes to an otherwise impressive New Zealand fielding display.
New Zealand captain Tom Latham won the toss and his pacemen made the home team suffer.
Debutant Emilio Gay was out for eight, while Joe Root and wicketkeeper Jamie Smith both scored just one run.
Gay, playing in place of dropped opener Zak Crawley, hit his first ball in Test cricket for four but was first to go with the score on 16 when he edged Jamieson to Daryl Mitchell in the slips.
Rain forced an early lunch, with England 24-1 off 10 overs.
When play resumed, Nathan Smith trapped opening batsman Ben Duckett lbw for 19 before Jacob Bethell was dismissed in similar fashion by Will O’Rourke to leave England in deep trouble at 33-3.

O’Rourke next captured the prized wicket of Root, caught behind as he opened the face, before Smith was clean bowled playing no shot to a Jamieson ball that cut back and knocked out his off stump.
Brook, dropped early in his innings by Devon Conway at backward point, gave England fans something to cheer with a couple of resounding pulls for four before he was joined in the middle by captain Ben Stokes, on the all-rounder’s 35th birthday.
But Stokes, just after pulling Jamieson for four, fell for 12 when an edge off the fast bowler was superbly caught low and one-handed by second slip Kane Williamson, diving in front of first slip.
England were now in dire straits at 94-6, with all their specialist batsmen except Brook dismissed.
Brook had another reprieve, on 45, when he pulled Jamieson to deep midwicket only for Rachin Ravindra to somehow drop a straightforward catch.
But Jamieson struck again as Gus Atkinson was out lbw for four.
An edged boundary took Brook to a 64-ball fifty, including nine fours, but with only the tail for company he holed out to long leg off Jamieson soon afterwards.
The Test at Lord’s, the 150th at the London ground, is the first of a three-game series.
