Estonia's Niina Petrokina won the women's figure skating title at the European championships by a wide margin
Sheffield (United Kingdom) (AFP) - Estonian Niina Petrokina became European figure skating champion for the second consecutive time after a magnificent free programme in Sheffield on Friday.
Despite suffered an Achilles tendon injury in the first part of the season, Petrokina racked up a personal best total score of 216.14 points three weeks before the Milan Cortina Olympics get underway on February 6.
In her brown and turquoise sequined dress, she smoothly navigated the challenges during a programme inspired by the film “Dune”.
“When I finished the programme, I already knew it was enough,” said the 21-year-old. “I don’t know how I did it, but I feel unstoppable.”
She scored just short of 25 points more than runner-up Belgian Loena Hendrickx while Italy’s Lara Naki Gutmann took third for her first European medal.
